The EU Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD) represents, since December 2001, the guideline of the european activities in the field of integrated and sustainable water management. It stresses the scale of river catchments, such as the Danube River Basin. In this context, IAD, and in particular the expert group "Saprobiology", can provide significant contributions through their scientific expertise.

The water quality maps of the Danube and its tributaries show the situations of 1995 and 2002, and visualise the success of water protection thus far achieved (i.e. installation of waste water treatment plants) and the still existing deficits.

For the classification of the ecological status all phytoplankton, macrophytes, phytobenthos, benthic invertebrate fauna and fish need to be evaluated. Thereby, and in line with the EU-WFD, methods must be harmonised to enable a proper comparison of national data.
